Organic Prairie Producer Ron Rosmann Receives Outstanding Pork Quality Award
As Organic Valley Family of Farms celebrates is 20th year, the cooperative of organic farmers recently recognized hundreds of its farmer-owners – including those who produce meat for Organic Prairie, the co-op’s meat label – with Outstanding Quality awards. Among this year’s recipients was Ron Rosmann, an Iowa farmer recognized with the Outstanding Pork Quality Award for his years of dedication to producing highest quality organic meat without the use of synthetic hormones, pesticides or antibiotics.
“Organic Prairie is pleased to work with Ron Rosmann, a committed high-quality producer of organic livestock,” said Tedd Heilmann, Organic Prairie general manager. “Ron is an excellent farmer who has shared his leadership skills with Organic Valley and Organic Prairie as a way to foster a sustainable farming future for the coming generations.”
Ron and his wife, Maria, operate a 600-acre certified-organic farm northwest of Harlan, Iowa, producing beef along with corn, oats, soybeans, barley, hay and pasture. In addition to raising cattle and hogs for Organic Prairie, the Rosmann’s run their own private label meat business under the name of Rosmann Family Farms.
Rosmann was evaluated on the quality of hogs shipped to Organic Prairie and his overall farm operation, criteria that included operator handling of hogs, excellent herd health, sustainable farm practices, quality facilities, producer knowledge of organic hog production and family farm goals. Among Organic Prairie’s 25 Pork Pool producers, Rosmann and one other member tied for this year’s Quality Award.
Organic Valley recognized Rosmann last month during its annual meeting in La Farge, Wis., honoring him and other farmer-members for their 2007 achievements.
